U.S. Model 1842 Musket - CSA "Captured & Collected
Description: This is a U.S. Springfield Model 1842 smoothbore .69 caliber percussion musket manufactured at the Springfield, MA federal arsenal in 1855. What makes it special is that it bears a 'Q' stamp in front of the triggerguard tang indicating that this is a Confederate "Captured & Collected" Reissued Firearm. Recently published book "Captured & Collected Confederate Reissued Firearms" by Capt Steven W. Knott, USN (ret.) includes much research and documentation regarding the provenance of these 'Q' marked weapons that were either captured or collected from Civil War battlefields by Confederate forces, cleaned and repaired by Confederate arsenals and reissued to Confederate troops. The book may be ordered from the Horse Soldier shop in Gettysburg, PA. This musket is in exceptionally fine condition with clean smooth iron parts showing a semi-bright finish, no rust pitting. The gun has a fine clean smoothbore and all its original parts, including ramrod, screws, and sling swivels. Markings and action are fine. The fine walnut stock retains its original arsenal oil finish and bears the 'JS' federal insection cartouche at the left flat. The barrel breech plug is not dated indicating it was probably replaced as part of the re-conditioning of the weapon before reissue. This is a fine weapon in all respects and quite desirable with the Confederate ordnance captured and collected 'Q' mark. SOLD Antique: Yes |
