U.S. Model 1861 Civil War Musket by Alfred Jenks & Son... + BAYONET ... LAYAWAY?
SALE PENDING
Description: LOOKS MUCH MUCH BETTER IN HAND THAN BLURRY PHOTOS!.....58 cal, 40” barrel with partially bright, very good bore showing some light oxidation and perhaps some shallow pitting with strong rifling throughout. The barrel has toned to a speckled pewter gray-brown patina while the other steel hardware retains about 90% nickel, the buttplate retaining perhaps 85%, with scattered dings, some spots of nickel flaking, and some mild spots of tarnish and oxidation. The lockplate is marked “U.S. / Bridesburg” with the Federal Eagle forward of the hammer and the 1862 date at the rear, and only a “U” remaining on the buttplate. Likely a GAR display, due to the nickeling,The barrel retains the “V / P / (Eagle head)” breech marking and is dated 1863 by the lower tang, indicating that it was a transitional factory assembly as they used newer barrels aon the last of their lockplates.. The walnut stock rates very good with a raised grain pattern, some light dings and handling marks, wear around the ramrod channel, and a 1 1/4” hairline crack at the butt. There are two light inspector’s cartouches on the left side of the stock. Included is a U.S. marked bayonet that shows wear consistent with the rest of the rifle. Also included is the proper, tulip shaped ramrod. The action appears to function well mechanically. A fine musket for a U.S. martial collector.
