U.S. Model 1841 Hall's Patent "Fish-Tail" Breechloading Percussion Rifle
Description: Here is a quite scarce U.S. Military Rifle - the U.S. Model 1841 Hall's Patent Percussion Breechloading Rifle. Unlike the many percussion conversions of the Model 1819 Flintlock Hall rifle, this arm was manufactured as an original percussion breechloader, and is NOT a conversion from the Model 1819 flintlock model. These guns were only manufactured at the Harper's Ferry Federal Arsenal during 1841 and 1842. There are two distinct models, a transitional model that retained the original M1819 type hook breech lever release, and the more desirable "Fish-Tail" breech lever release as used on the Model 1840 Hall percussion cbreechloading carbine. A total of 4,213 of these rifles were manufatured and the "Fish-Tail" type is seen less often than the transitional model. The Model 1841 Hall incorporated several improved changes from the Model 1819 Hall flintlock, most notably a newly designed and milled percussion breech block, not converted or altered form the M1819 flintlock breech block. The flintlock and percussion conversion models have 16 poly-groove rifled bores with the uppermost one and one half inches of the bore being smooth to facilitate muzzleloading if required. The Model 1841 barrel is rifled all the way to the muzzle with seven groove rifling. On the Model 1841 The large pistol grip trigger guard extension of the M1819 was eliminated and the two piece trigger guard was replaced with a one piece trigger guard strap with a larger bow. The rear sling swivel was moved to the end of the M1841 trigger guard strap. The breech block chock screws on the Model 1841 are much larger than the M1819 and recessed into the frame straps. The breech block markings on the Model 1841 are different as well having eliminated the "J.H. Hall" stamp of the Model 1819 and is simply stamped "H. Ferry/US over the date (1841 on this example). The thumb spur on the Model 1841 rifle is checkered, the conversion hammers used on Model 1819 flint to percusion conversions have no checkering. The gun offered here is the "Fish-Tail" type and retains a deep rich brown finish on all iron parts, except for the breech block, hammer, and fish-tail lever that were originally case hardened. The finish appears to be a mix of the original aresnal applied brown lacquer and aged brown patina. The mechanics are excellent as well as the breech block markings. The rifled bore is excellent plus, bright and shiney. All original screws are fine, original cleaning rod and sling swivels are present. The dark walnut stock is extra fine, retaining all of its original oil finish and has no cracks, slivers or chips missing. None of the Harper's Ferry produced Hall rifles have inspection cartouches on their stocks, nor does this one, so this is also correct. This is a pretty scarce U.S. military rifle and being in very nice complete original condition would make a nice addition to any collection of Mexican War and/or Civil War longarm collections.
