US Model 1855 Harper's Ferry 2-Band Rifle
Description: This is a US Model 1855 2-band iron mounted rifle manufactured in 1859 at the Federal Harper's Ferry arsenal. When CSA General Thomas J. Jackson captured the armory in 1861 many of these rifles were then in storage and the captured guns were pressed in to CSA service. Thus, these rifles have always had a stromg association with Confederate used arms. A total of 7,317 were manufactured of which the first 3,545 were brass mounted with the later 3,772 produced being iron mounted. This iron mounted example is in untouched and uncleaned as-found condition having a beautiful dark aged brown patina on all the iron parts with patches of gunmetal peeking through the patina. The markings on the lockplate and barrel are all fine with matching 1859 dates on lock and barrel. There is the usual light roughness on the top flat of the barrel but the date is clear and legible as are the proof stamps. The lower barrel baand has rack/unit marks of 'H' over '57'. The barrel retains the bayonet lug at right front and the .58 caliber rifled bore is fine with strong clean rifling all the way down the bore. There are no vice marks on the barrel and the breech plug shows no evidence of any attempt to remove it. The lock mechanics and nipple are fine and the action locks up tight on half and full cock. The rifle retains all of its original parts including the screws, ramrod, sling swivels and sights with correct 'R' for rifle marked leafs on the rear sight. This example is fitted with a deeply dark tarnished brass nosecap. The stock is very fine and untouched with its original oil finish and correct inspector stamp on the left flat. The edges are crisp and there is no evidence of the stock having been sanded, or refinished. A spare nipple and unopened roll of Maynard tape primers is in the capbox. All-in-all, this is a scarce and desirable rifle that saw some war time use and has not been touched or monkeyed with since it was retired from service.
