******** BEAUTIFUL VERY RARE COLT 1855 .44 VARIANT SN 466 REVOLVING MILITARY RIFLE ********

Scarce and desirable CIVIL WAR Colt, Model 1855, full stock Sporting Revolving Rifle, SN 466, manufactured from 1856 to 1864 with this .44 caliber example having an early production three digit serial number. The butt plate matches and includes the brass extension cleaning rod in the storage compartment. Fitted with a dovetail brass blade front sight and three leaf rear sight. Correctly lacks provision for a bayonet. There are two barrel bands, a partially broken sling swivel attached to the underside of the butt stock and rear barrel band, cleaning rod, 6-shot fluted cylinder, butt stock with solid crescent butt plate and full length forearm with brass end cap. This rifle has a correct Colt folding tang sight. It retains traces of original finish on the frame and barrel with the balance a smooth brown patina. The wood is in overall good condition with a number of minor-moderate dings and scratches. The right side of the butt stock has rare design created from brad tacks* and has had a coat of varnish applied. The action, loading lever and tang sight function properly and the bore is very good. A BEAUTIFUL & RARE Piece of our History in Very Good Condition. Some collectors buy quality some buy History here you have the rare opportunity to purchase both. This could have possibly been owned by an American Indian Troop as an estimated 20,000 Indian soldiers participated in the conflict, fighting for both sides. At the outset of the war, many nations in Indian Territory signed treaties with the Confederacy—supported by a minority of wealthy slave-holding Indians within their communities. But many Indians leaned toward abolitionism and advocated for sovereign independence from the U.S. and its bloody conflict. As the war progressed, momentum shifted as three Indian Home Guard regiments emerged to support the Union and protect vulnerable tribal communities from violent guerrilla warfare. The result: Indians fighting Indians in a white man’s war.
