Colt AR-15A2 Government Model R6550 Factory Built 5.56 w/Original Box, Magazine + Spares
Description: This is a very nice example of one of the rarer models of the Colt AR-15. The AR-15A2 Gov’t Model is one of the most sought after of Colt’s AR-15 rifles. They were not in production for very long, being produced from roughly 1988 to 1990. The reason for the interest in these rifles is the fact that they are nearly identical to those issued to the U.S. Military during the late 1980s/early 1990s. It uses the standard A2 furniture with one exception. While early examples of the Gov’t Model had the bayonet lug, later examples, such as this one, have the bayonet lug ground down. This is interesting as deleting the bayonet lug would later become a requirement for all AR rifles produced during the “assault weapons” ban of the 1990s. As you will notice, the receiver of this rifle is stamped “.223” but the barrel is stamped “5.56”. This is not surprising. Essentially Colt produced large numbers of lowers marked “.223” before the switch was made to chambering the civilian rifles for the 5.56. Many of these would have been left over and simply discarding them was not option. As such, the .223 receivers were used until they were all gone. Although there is certainly no danger in shooting a .223 through a barrel marked “5.56”, this situation illustrates why it is always important, when purchasing ammo for a rifle, to go by what is stamped on the barrel rather than the receiver. The barrel uses a 1:7” twist for stabilizing bullets from 55gr up to 77gr in weight. The bore is also chrome-lined which protects the bore from corrosion over long periods without cleaning, should this become necessary. The accuracy of the Colt AR-15 rifle is well noted. With good ammo these rifles are known to be capable of making nearly 1 MOA shots at 100 yards or more, provided the shooter does their part. The Gov’t Model is certainly a fine example of the AR15 and would serve its owner well. As mentioned, the rifle is previously owned. It has been fired only enough to sight the rifle in, as evidenced by the tiny bit of brass residue on the cartridge deflector. Had it seen more use, the amount of brass residue would be much greater. The bolt itself is clean with little evidence of unburnt powder or gunk on it. The bore is also very clean. Unfortunately, the A2 flash hider forces me to keep the camera far away enough to take a picture with a good view of the bore itself. I apologize for the poor quality of the photo. The rifle does come with its original box. Unfortunately the label is long gone. The residue from the sticker left a darkened spot in the shape of the stick itself. The back wall of the box is worn on each of the two vertical sides and as such the box can open up much wider than it should. Please see the pictures. The 20-round magazine is original to this rifle. However it also comes with a few modern Magpul PMAGs for good measure. One is a Gen 3 PMAG 20 and the other is a Gen 2 PMAG 30. The rifle also comes with a nicesling.
