Colt “Express Model” Large Frame Lightning Slide Action Rifle .40-60-260 Caliber. This first year (1887) production, serial number 287. Rifle is in fine condition, the 28” octagon barrel has a good bore with strong rifling. Has German Silver front sight and sporting rear sight. The barrel has approximately 92% blue. The magazine tube is blue turning slightly to plumb. The reminder of the metal ranges from approximately 40% blue/brown on the receiver to a brown patina on the butt plate. The wood is fine with most of the original finish and no cracks or chips. The large frame is by far the scarcest of Colt Lightning rifles. Fewer than 6.500 were made between 1887 and 1894.
