Excellent Civil War Colt 1861 Special Musket w/ Bayonet
Description: NSN, .58 Caliber, 40" barrel with an excellent, bright bore. The metal of this 1863 dated musket (matching on lock plate and barrel tang) have developed a mild plum-brown patina with the balance retaining the original armory bright finish. The musket is also equipped with a blued metal front sight hood. The walnut stock has not been sanded, and exhibits only a few very minor handling marks and blemishes. The inspector cartouches are crisp and clear, and a period leather sling, flaked along the edges but still intact and fully serviceable, is installed. Included with the musket is a correct, Model 1855 US socket bayonet that has minor spots of pinprick pitting, with the metal cleaned to armory bright. The name "E.J. BALL" is punch marked into the trigger guard bow, and a cursory search of the American Civil War Database lists an E.J. Ball as a Private in Co. F, 108th Indiana Infantry regiment, which was raised for a period of one week in response to "Morgan’s Raid" in July of 1863. Ball served from July 10 until July 17. Additionally, a later electro-engraved serial number is also present on the trigger guard tang. The mechanism is still tight and fully functional and the musket rates excellent condition overall.
