Rare Full Octagon Barrel – Original Configuration
Offered is an original 1839 Colt Paterson percussion shoulder arm with a 32-inch full octagon barrel, a configuration rarely encountered and notably scarcer than the more commonly observed round or part-octagon Paterson long arms. Colt Paterson shoulder arms are among the most elusive of all early Colt firearms, and many advanced Colt collections lack an example entirely.
The barrel retains its correct address:
“Patent Arms Mfg. Co. Paterson, N.J. – Colt’s Pt.”
This rifle remains in original configuration and presents evenly throughout, with consistent age and patina. The walnut stock is solid and sound, showing honest period handling wear with no apparent structural issues.
Serial number 620 is marked on the rotating portion of the cylinder pin, consistent with known examples. The action is mechanically functional, indexes properly with four distinct clicks, and locks up, exhibiting some looseness typical of early Colt percussion arms from this era.
