RARE, EARLY COLT 1st Model 1855 Revolving Rifle “Sporting” 3-DIGIT SERIAL
With Hunter & Deer Cylinder Scene
Description: RARE, EARLY COLT 1st Model 1855 Revolving Rifle “Sporting” 3-DIGIT SERIAL With Hunter & Deer Cylinder Scene Here we present an antique Colt Model 1855 1st Model Percussion Revolving Sporting Rifle, manufactured circa 1856 through 1859 in Hartford, Connecticut. Most of us have seen a Colt “Sidehammer,” but few have had the pleasure of seeing a sidehammer Sporting Rifle. These sidehammers also go by the nickname “Root” thanks to the involvement of Elisha K. Root, who was instrumental to the early success of Colt Manufacturing. These rare revolving rifles have much in common with their other sidehammer brethren (the revolvers, military rifles, half stock Sporters, shotguns, and carbines), though it was the design and balance of the full and half stock Sporting rifles that made them a preferred presentation piece of Samuel Colt. Known specimens have been presented to the aforementioned Mr. Root, Secretary of War John B. Floyd, the Major and Second Kings of Siam, as well as members of the Russian Imperial Court. Needless to say, these were highly valued weapons back then and an absolute treasure to collectors today. Of all the Model 1855 Sporting Rifles manufactured from 1855-1864, only a small number have 27” barrels like this one. Most of the sporting rifles are half stock models, approximately 1,000 – 1,500, while the full stocked Sporting Rifles are thought to number much less, although the actual number is unknown. The Book of Colt Firearms lists their number as “limited” and “the utmost rarity.” while Colt: An American Legend doesn’t list a production number at all – instead erring on the side of caution to say that only 18,300 long guns of all types were produced. The overall condition is very good. There is a good amount of original blue finish throughout. The cylinder scene is still visible but faint. The numbers match on the frame, cylinder, and butt plate. The action is excellent. The bore is in very good condition with strong rifling. The stock has been repaired. This is a true rarity in Colt collecting! Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 27 inches. Caliber: .36 Percussion Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE.
