Colt `s Law Enforcement Carbine 5.56mm NATO First Year of Production for Government Agencies and Export Only
Description: The barrel on this upper is marked with a barrel date of 5/98 and the shipping date attributable to the serial number is 1998 according to Colt Archives. 1998 is generally accepted as the year that Colt released the M4 Law Enforcement Carbine, a derivative of the military M4 carbine, which had been in use for the first four years of the so called “Assault Weapons Ban” of 1994. The Law Enforcement Carbine was marked “Restricted Military/Government/Law Enforcement/Export Use Only” on the right side of the magazine well, and unavailable to all others under penalty of imprisonment for a period of ten years, after which it was scheduled to “sunset,” and did in September of 2004. Guns manufactured under the ban carried a serial number prefix of “LE” followed by six numerical digits, very popular to collectors for decades after the ban, and still is. This barrel date of May, 1998, is the fifth month of the first year of the release and seldom seen. The barrel is marked C and a joined MP on the top line, and "5.56 NATO 1/7" for the caliber and barrel twist on the bottom line. The upper receiver is Marked C for Colt and a joined AF for Alcoa Forge or Accurate Forge. The front sight block is marked with the appropriate F, signifying the correct height for sighting in a flat top firearm. Generally, the upper is in good to very good condition with minimal rubs and handling marks, but nothing serious. This rifle has been restored to its original configuration by removing the "fat" handguard, not yet introduced by Colt at the time of manufacture, and replacing it with the 6-hole "skinny" handguard then in use. That was all the restoration needed to bring originality back in line, except that the forward side sling might not be original, but was left in place anyway. The lower remains as it was issued, with the N1 stock, then in use due to the fact that the "waffle stock" had not yet come into the picture. There exists the normal wear for a 26 year old used rifle, but good plus plus seems appropriate. By the way, the dirty handguard has been cleaned up. It is suggested that the pictures be reviewed inasmuch as they are integral to this description. Buyer pays actual cost of shipping and insurance. As always, it is highly recommended that used firearms be inspected and approved by an experienced gunsmith prior to firing. Thanks for looking.
