Colt Large Frame Lightning .38-56-255 caliber rifle. The overall length is approximately 41½. The 24” octagon .38-56-255 caliber barrel has a shootable bore with good rifling with areas of light pitting. The metal is approximately 85% blue turning brown. The right side of the receiver is a smooth even blue/brown patina, while the left is a brown patina with several areas of light to moderate pitting. The forward portion of the trigger guard has light pitting. The left side of the barrel toward the breech has a couple of areas of light pitting. The buttstock is fine, no cracks or chips. The wrists are very nicely carved with a scroll and leaf pattern. The checkered forend is very good with a couple of old chips and two stress cracks to the rear. The large frame is by far the scarcest of the Colt Lightning rifles. Chambered for big game cartridges, they were no competition to the lever action Winchesters and Marlins. Only 6,496 were made between 1887 and 1894. The action on this rifle functions correctly. The original sights are present and it looks better than the description. Don’t miss this one. Large frame Lightning rifles are few and far between.
