Colt Lightning .38 Octagon barrel, Antique, 1896 Very Good condition. Colt Archives Letter accompanies.
Description: Lightning .38 Colt Lightning Magazine Rifle and Carbine (CLMR) with octagon barrel, antique, issued 1896. Very Good condition. Colt Archives Letter accompanies. Antique Colt Lightning Slide Action Rifle in .38 CLMR, issued in 1896, in Hartford, Connecticut. It was the first center fire slide action rifle manufactured by Colt starting in 1884. This was Colt’s entry into the pistol caliber rifle and carbine market, which was absolutely dominated by Winchester at this time. Pistol caliber rifles were instrumental in the hands of those settling the West, as they were able to carry one type of ammunition to feed both their long gun and their sidearm. It also enabled a rifle to be stoked with the maximum number of cartridges, sacrificing power for capacity, useful when outnumbered at close range. The Colt Lightning was fairly successful, but never approached the numbers that Winchester’s lever action was able to achieve making it more rare. This Colt Lighting features a 26-inch barrel that is chambered in .38 CLMR, a very capable cartridge that was Colt’s version of Winchester’s .38 WCF, different only in the weight of the powder charge. The top of the barrel is marked “38 Cal.” and “COLT’S PT.F.A. MFG. CO. HARTFORD CT. U.S.A./PATENTED MAY 29 SEPT 18.83, May 28 85, Feb 22 87”. Antique Colt Lightning Medium-Frame Rifle, #79971, 26'' octagonal barrel, buckhorn-style open sight, marked ''38 Cal.'' at breech; full-length 15-shot mag tube below; marked ''79971'' on lower tang; sliding oil-stained two-piece walnut forearm with double-line bordering, Buttstock with steel crescent buttplate. Factory letter states shipped to V.A.&C. 2937, London, England, on May 23, 1896, 10 guns in shipment. Condition is very good retaining approx. significant original blue, thinning and mixing with brown and having scattered oxidation, especially to receiver, buttplate is gunmetal gray. Stocks are sound with age and use marks, especially to left wrist of buttstock, which has nice flame grain. Action is smooth; bore is clean with light frosting and fine rifling. Old wagon seat side impression marks on left wrist of stock. The overall condition is good. The metal surfaces have been cleaned bright. The markings are clear and legible. The stock is in good shape. The bore is in very good condition with good rifling. The action on this rifle is excellent. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. No FFL or C&R license required. As antique ships direct to buyer. Cashiers check, Money order, Personal Check or layaway accdepted.
