Colt lightning .44WCF
Description: Up for review is a very nice Colt pump action "baby" sadle ring carbine. It was produced during the middle years that Colt was making these things at least in part in an effort to compete with Winchester's 92 lever action rifle that had become a sought after gun at the time. Colt manufactured their little fast action rifle in several calibers and this one happens to be perhaps their most popular one, the .44WCF. Only a few of these guns were developed as a lightened frontier type carry around piece and these were "not" designated as "baby" carbines at the time. Later through usage they were given this name by the men and/or women who carried them. Today this nomenclature has carried forward. The production years of these Colt rifles was somewhere between 1894 and 1904 varying a bit according to your information source. Approximately 90,000 total Colt lightnings were produced but a much smaller number of these were the lightened version. They never competed successfully with the 92 and 94 Winchesters and so were dropped off Colt's manufacturing list. The one listed here is a good original example with interestingly a mint bore and a 20 inch barrel. It has nice wood containing much of the original finish. The bluing has plumbed out in a few places as a result of aging but continues to have a pleasant appearance. Almost all of these original guns shoot a bit high at close range for what ever reason with their original sights and this one does just that. It patterns right at 1 1/2 inches at 50 yards but 3 inches over the point of aim however. The action is quite smooth and it handles well. Hopefully my pictures will answer any questions that might arise but if not I'll try and answer them on the phone or through the G.I.site. Thanks very much for your interest so far.
