It is a rare early ist model ‘OPEN TOP’ Lightning. The 38-40 ammo is readily available and is flatter shooting than the 44 without sacraficing power. An OPEN TOP ORIGINAL COLT LIGTNING at a cowboy action shoot – says A lot about the shooter’s standards. All original except for the finish on the metal parts. The mechanics are as crisp and tight as a mint condition example and I have owned many of these over the years. The original wood fit is as good as it gets. The piece was obviously was blued only for normal cosmetic surface wear and was never rust pitted or otherwise damaged. It is an excellent dollar value – not much more than a wanna-be replica. An open top 1st model in 95 - 98% original blue would easily bring close to $5000 in the marketplace oday. The original bore is very strong with only minor flaws which are not enough to effect accuracy at all. It is an antique so no permit or licence is necessary.
