** SOLD ** Dutch Beaumont 1871/88 Bolt Action Magazine Conversion Rifle in 11.3mm Caliber **Non Import Marked- Carbine Sporter**
Description: Presented here is a very interesting Dutch Beaumont 1871/88 bolt action rifle in 11.3mm caliber. The 1871 Beaumont and its variants were the service rifle of the Armed forces of the Netherlands between 1871 and 1895, and by the Royal Netherlands East Indies Army into the 1900s. It was one of the first military arms adopted by a European power using a metallic cartridge. The bolt of the rifle used a split bolt design similar to the French Chassepot, and used a unique leaf mainspring inside the two-piece bolt handle—which was later used by the Murata Type 13 and Type 18 rifles in Japan. The M1871/88 Beaumont-Vitali rifle was introduced in 1888 following developments in firearms design. In the 1880s, the adoption of repeating rifles and the invention of smokeless gunpowder made the Beaumont M1871 obsolete. The Dutch military approved the M1871/88 in 1889, adding a 4-round Vitali magazine to around 60,000 existing rifles. Other modifications included updated sights and ejector, and vent holes in the event of case rupture. An unusual system, the bolts spring is in fact housed inside the bolt handle, from an era of great firearms development worldwide, the dawn of the breach-loading period this is unusual and not easy to find. This particular example is of the 1871/88 configuration with the magazine, sights for 1800 meters, vent holes and other improvements. This rifle is in generally good condition exhibiting normal wear on metal and wooden components. The metal components have worn to a handsome warm grey patina some high edge wear. The stock is in very good condition with the only flaw being a crack running parallel to the barrel from the front of the magazine to the back of the front sling attachment (see photo 14). This rifle would make a great addition to a collection of European militaria or a strong start to a new collection.
