Offered her for sale and just acquired along with a fine collection fine of heavy benchrest target rifles is this fine heavy target rifle custom crafted by well known gunsmith and custom rifle maker Richard Ruggeiro of Connecticut.
The “6 mm SM Wasp” (or “6 mm Seeley Masker Wasp”) is not a factory-standard cartridge, but a wildcat / custom-wildcat that was developed in the 1980s by gunsmith Seeley Masker .
The idea behind it was to create a 6 mm-caliber round that mirrored the case capacity / performance of a more mainstream “6 mm benchrest cartridge” (like 6mm PPC) — but using more readily available brass. The “6 mm SM Wasp” was primarily formed by necking-up / modifying cases from the family of cartridges based on .30-30 Winchester / .225 Winchester (or variants), rather than relying on rarer or hard-to-find brass. The 6 mm SM Wasp uses a 30-degree shoulder — this shoulder angle is also what distinguished it (and the 219 Wasp) from some cartridges like .225 Winchester.
Cases can be formed from .225 Win brass, or from .30-30 Win (or even .30 American / “30 American” — which itself was a small-primer, match-grade version of .30-30 developed for custom conversions).
The 6 mm SM Wasp was meant to be a competitive, accurate 6 mm cartridge — usable in bolt-action or single-shot rifles with appropriate action & barrel — similar to Wasp or PPC wildcats.
This specimen uses a Wichita Arms stainless 28” barrel placed in a highly attractive yellow fiberglass stock. There are a few marks on the rear comb behind action but overall a very sound rifle showing only light wear. The rifle also comes equipped with a Lyman All American 35X scope completing this package. Also include is the original set of dies for the cartridge.
