Custom .505 Gibbs Rifle
Description:
The rifle is as follows : The action is a BBK-02 ,which has been polished and is very smooth. It is a square bridge, Mauser type, with controlled round feed for reliable feeding and ejection, and a Winchester M70 type, 3 position safety, which permits loading and unloading with the safety on. It is one of the few actions that is large enough to properly handle the .505 Gibbs cartridge. The magazine capacity is 2 rounds. The trigger is fully adjustable and has a clean, sharp break. The barrel is a McGowan, 24 in. long , with a recessed crown, and a 2nd recoil lug installed approximately where the rear sight is, on the underside of the barrel. All metal surfaces, including the scope mounts, but not the bolt shank, have been given the Birdsong Black T finish, one of the toughest finishes available. Sights consist of an open, adjustable rear and a ramp front with a large, white bead, and shielded with a detachable hood. The metalwork was done by McGowan Rifle Barrels. The barrel has been Magna-Ported with the Quad Port process. It greatly reduces muzzle jump , which can be important in follow up shots. The stock is a MacMillan Safari stock, with a Pachmayr Decelerator recoil pad, and pillar bedded by MacMillan. LOP = 14 in. It has 2 flush mounted sling swivel studs, one on the butt end and one on the forend, as well as an additional stud attached to the underside of the barrel , so the rifle can be carried either of 2 ways. The scope mounts consist of custom machined Leupold bases and Leupold rings. Both the rear base and the rear ring are the extension type, so that a scope can be mounted as far forward as desired. Take a good look at this, , since the Gibbs has a lot of recoil and having sufficient eye relief is not an option but a necessity. Most guns in this caliber, even some high end ones, do not provide for enough eye relief for a variable power scope with it's power selector ring. The left rear base windage screw has been replaced with a Pilkington Quick Release lever . Rotating this lever half a rotation counterclockwise will enable the scope to be rotated 90 degrees to the left and lifted out of the front dovetail. It takes about 3 sec. This mounting system holds it's zero when the scope is detached and replaced. Weight of the gun is 12 # without scope. NOTE: The scope is not included , but the mounts are. The rifle is capable of 1 “ groups at 100 yds. (Test target included).
This gun is properly set up to hold recoil to a minimum which, again, is necessary in this caliber. I am not going to say you can shoot it off the bench all day, but from a standing position , off safari sticks, it is reasonably comfortable . It has only been fired at the range.
Reloading dies and brass are available.
This is an excellent choice in the Gibbs if you don't want to spend $10,000 plus for a high grade gun. It is a lot of gun for the money (in more ways than one). Thank you for your interest.
