Dale Goens Custom Win Pre-64 70, 270 Win, Moschetti Engraved, Near Mint
Description: Dale Goens .270 Win. Custom Pre-64 M70, Moschetti Engraved, Goens’ Famous Fluer-de-lis Checkering, XXX wood, Near Mint Dale Goens, Ser. No. 1141, Complete Custom built on a Pre-64 Model 70 action in the classic style with engraving and fancy checkering, built in 1984. The Roger Rule Collection. For the metal work, starting with this 1952 action, Goens honed the rails and bolt, built up and checkered the bolt stop release, reshaped the rear action tang to match the pre-war style, lengthened and reshaped the bolt handle similar to Mauser, checkered the bolt knob with his 2-panel tear drop design and jeweled the bolt and follower. For the barrel, he chose an early Krieger barrel with cut-rifling, 22 ½” in length and finished it tapered round without sights. The maker retained many of the proven Model 70 features: the steel under metal, the great Model 70 adjustable trigger (lightened to 2 lb), and retained the renowned three-position safety copied worldwide today. For the stock, he chose an excellent piece of exceptionally figured English walnut with rich color and contrasting streaks; carved a classic stock shape with perfect dimensions, a classic comb with beaded cheekpiece for the right-hand shooter, added a genuine Ebony forend tip. a steel pistol grip cap, and a Biesen checkered steel butt plate. The sling swivels are inlaid with two-screw tie downs. He finished the stock with a satin French-polished oil finish, then hand checkered his famous Goens classic wrap-around Fleur-de-lis checkering patterns with ribbons through the panels. The engraving: For final touches, Mitch Moschetti engraved complete coverage of very nice floral engraving over the entire floorplate, trigger guard and grip cap. LOP is 13 5/8” over Biesen checkered steel butt plate; Weight is 7 lbs. 14 oz. without scope. The scope is Swarovsk 3-10x42 A Habicht mounted in fixed Talley rings. About the master gunmaker: The late great Dale W. Goens, Cedar Crest, New Mexico, passed away in July 2005. He was an early member of the American Custom Gunmakers' Guild and built many custom bolt action rifles on both Mauser and pre-64 Model 70 actions. Gunwriters have said “today, we in America, are living in what will be known in the future as the apex of custom gunmaking. Dale Goens will be remembered as one of the greatest gunmakers/stockmakers of our time.” In Modern Custom Guns, the author, Tom Turpin, separates the early pre-WWII makers from the group that began building their rifles for telescopic sights. On page 134, in his second page of introducing the current gunmakers, Turpin states: “Some of the early makers (meaning after WWII) were Monty Kennedy, Leonard Brownell, Leonard Mews, Hal Hartley, Keith Stegall, Skip Barlett, Dale Goens and Al Biesen. Alas, all these wonderful craftsmen are now deceased save one (Al Biesen, now in his nineties).” Dale Goens will be missed, but much of his magnificent work lives on. Condition: The original Goens blue remains at 99.5%, the original stock finish at 100%, and the checkering is at 100%, The bore looks brand new. This rifle is a tack driver with 1/4 MOA..
