Engraved Mauser Bolt-Magazine Sporting Rifle by John Dickson & Son; ca.1980's Edinburgh, Scotland Production/Retailed Through Alexander Martin, 20 Exchange Square, Glasgow; Barrel: 24 1/4" Nitro; Double Set Triggers; Pistol Grip European Walnut Stock: LOP: 14 1/4"; Horn Buttplate, Raised Monte Carlo Cheekpiece; Cast: Off 1/4", Toe In; Weight: 9 lbs. 13 oz.; Includes Hensoldt Diasta-D 6x42 Telescopic Sight Exceptional .300 Win. Mag Mauser Sporting Rifle with patriotic Scottish engraving by John Dickson/Alexander Martin of Edinburgh & Glasgow...this remarkable magazine rifle was produced during the period between John Dickson's acquisition of Alexander Martin in 1965 and the closing of the Glasgow storefront in 1988. Of best quality, the work exhibits painfully fine attention to detail and masterful artistry, tastefully blending classic luxury with late 20th Century style, resulting in what may be the ultimate expression of the modern Scottish gunmaker's art. Built around a large ring Mauser action, the rifle features a capacity of three rounds, no bolt stop, double set triggers, swept-back bolt handle, 24" barrel with file-cut matted raised game rib, ramped blade front sight with hood, folding three leaf rear express sight, and, chambered in the ultra-versatile .300 Win. Mag, this lovely Dickson Mauser would be an ideal choice for any medium-to-large size North American game. A seamless marriage of class and opulence, luxury appointments include an elaborately hand-checkered stock of strikingly figured Walnut capped with trapdoor pistol grip and checkered horn plate, the forestock in beavertail configuration, rich polish on all metal surface, maker's name and retail address inlaid in gold on the barrel, and embellishment in the form of full coverage engraving. In a remarkable exhibition of artistry, the work consists of elaborate Celtic knots and geometric bordering that extends to the bolt handle, rear sight base, screws, furniture inlays, as well as the scope mount and rings, with the trigger guard and floor plate covered in detailed rolling foliate scroll highlighted by delicate shading and a recurring Scottish thistle motif. A breathtaking display of craftsmanship, with roots firmly planted, both in the past and present, this Dickson exudes bold flair tempered with tradition, all packaged in an exceptionally tuned sporting arm of the highest order. A uniquely styled rifle that exhibits flawless mechanical function, the chambering makes this rifle a serious game gun that would excel against any large North American prey. Introduced in the early 1960's, .300 Win Mag is one of the most widely used cartridges for elk, moose and bighorn sheep, and considered is ideal in the pursuit of African plains game. Appearing ready for the field for decades to come, this uniquely appointed John Dickson Mauser action bolt-magazine rifle represents a superb find for the hunter, as well as a sound investment that would be a showpiece addition to any discriminating collection. Condition Very fine, the gun retains 98% of high polish blue on the receiver, trigger guard and floorplate, the barrel showing only light loss to the best-quality blackening, confined entirely to the area around the muzzle. The markings are well-defined, unbuffed and crisply edged, with no fading to the bold engraving. The swept-back bolt handle is numbered matching, with the rifle's serial number on the bottom of the trigger guard. The thumb safety-clearly sourced from a K98k Mauser-retains the serial number, '73', and this may have been selected intentionally to denote the year of the rifle's completion. Other markings include standard London House proofs on the receiver, bolt and barrel, Nitro proving/pressure test marks on the barrel knox, and no sign of an importer mark(noteworthy as the gun was imported from the UK last year). The furniture is wonderfully preserved, having only a few dings and handling marks, with no notable wear to the checkering, nor any cracks, chips or repairs. Mechanically flawless, the action is buttery smooth, the rifle headspaces correctly, and the bore is bright with sharply-edged rifling beneath lint and dust, and no rust, pitting, frost or oxidation. Graded as very good plus, it will clean easily to excellent. The included Hensoldt Diasta-D 6x42 telescopic sight is in excellent condition, having light edge wear to the finish, good function and clear optics. SOLD |
