Jerry Fisher Winchester Model 70 Pre-64 270win
Description: Description: Rifle began its life new as a 1958 Pre-64 Winchester Model 70 Featherweight with factory 22” barrel and folding rear sight. Jerry Fisher did all the metal work and stocking. Rifle features a Redfield front blade sight with textured ramp and removable hood. Weaver quick release rings and bases with Leupold M8 6x36 gloss scope, duplex reticle. The bolt handle is thinned and features 2-panel checkering including modestly checkered bolt release. Bolt runway and feed ramp polished for silky smooth feeding from the Griffin & Howe hinged floorplate assembly with inside trigger guard release. Well figured French walnut stock styled in one of Fisher's earlier patterns featuring a swept cheekpiece, slim pistol grip and short forend, uncommon for its time. Perfectly executed wrap-around borderless fleur-de-lis checkering, classic ebony tip, finished off with matching Biesen steel buttplate and pistol grip cap. Weight with bases: 7 lbs 6 oz. Provenance: The rifle was originally commissioned by gun writer Roderick S. Carmen then of Denver, Colorado, ca 1960 after seeing an ad by Jerry Fisher offering custom stock services. The rifle went into service Fall of 1962. Shortly after, the rifle was featured in the Gun Digest Custom Guns section of the 18th Edition (1964). Jack O’Connor wrote to Mr. Carmen about the rifle after seeing it in the Gun Digest article describing it as an “…extremely handsome rifle” and that after seeing the photos, he was going to have Fisher stock a rifle for him. Mr. O’Connor then ran the same picture of the rifle in his article entitled “Stocks for hunting Rifles” which appeared in Outdoor Life’s December 1964 issue. During the same period, the rifle was used by Buehler for its ads picturing their scope mounts on the rifle. The rifle was later featured in the 1994 Gun Digest magazine titled A Classic Gets To Africa where Mr. Roderick elaborates on the rifle’s history. Finally, the rifle appeared again in the 20th Edition of the Gun Digest article titled “California-style” of custom stocks. Note: Rife is currently located in Canada and will require exporting to USA (buyers responsibility).
