Description:
MODEL 1885 HIGHWALL WITH 26" No. 1 CONTOUR OCTAGON BARREL, RELINED TO .22 HORNET AND FITTED WITH A NICHOLS BULLET 3-9X 40 SCOPE, #43XXX, MADE 1890. It appears the only thing done to this one is the relining of the bore and the mounting of the scope in Weaver-style bases- I suppose it is possible the barrel is not original, but the condition matches and it retains all the Winchester markings with, I assume, the original caliber marking under the rear scope mount base. The front and rear sights have been removed from the dovetails. Barrel blue is fine and shows only some age. The receiver is a lightly mottled gray. The butt stock actually has some nice fiddle-back grain to it that a good cleaning would bring out. The forend retains the ebony wedge in the schnable tip. Wood condition is fine with some wear/light dings to the bottom of the forend where it was obviously shot quite a bit off an unpadded rest. Wood to metal fit is excellent and the stock and forend color match perfectly. Bore is bright and excellent, action is tight and there is no indication of any abuse inside or out. Montana Vintage Arms makes a superb Winchester B-style scope that would go nicely on this one!
