Winston Elrod Winchester Pre-64 M70, 9.3x62, SAFARI PROVEN, vintage firearms inc
Description: General Specs: Winchester, 1950 Action, 9.3x62mm, 8lbs. 7oz., LOP 13 5/8″ Serial Number: 152315 Winston Elrod of Chesaning, Michigan has been a top-rated custom rifle builder for over 40 years. Any rifle built by this master gunmaker is a looker AND a shooter. This custom build begins with a 1950 Winchester Model 70 action with controlled round feed, a proven action for trips to Africa for dangerous game and an action that is smooth as silk in operation. Elrod actions are tuned and lapped for the best feed and function. The bolt handle has 4 checkered panels and an end panel with floral engraving, the bolt stop is built up and checkered, and the bottom plate is the classic Blackburn bottom metal. The 25” Krieger barrel chambered for the respected 9.3×62 medium bore cartridge is fitted with New England Custom Guns hooded full band ramped front sight and classic adjustable rear sight, retains 99% satin finished blue, barrel mounted sling swivel stud, and a perfect mirror shiny bore. The 9.3×62 is allowed for dangerous game by most Professional Hunters and is comparable to the .375 Holland & Holland cartridge ballistics. The 9.3×62 has less recoil and is built on a shorter action, making for a better rifle in many experienced rifleman’s opinion. The action is mounted with custom fixed Talley scope bases and Talley quick-detach rings allowing the scope to be removed for travel or iron sight use and remounted without losing zero. The stock is a gorgeous Bastogne walnut, inletted to the action and barrel to perfection as Elrod Winston is well-known for, classic American style with shadow line cheek piece, steel grip cap, full wrap around checkering with mullered border, inletted sling swivel stud, and a genuine Cape Buffalo forend tip to add the most critical classic touch to a rifle that just got back from a successful safari in Africa. The gun shows 99% condition overall with only the slightest hint of being afield. Weighing 8 ½ pounds without a scope it has dynamic handling characteristics and enough mass to reduce felt recoil. The classic solid red Pachmayr Decelerator pad is both aesthetically pleasing and functionally effective at doing the same for recoil. Finding a full custom rifle from a known maker in near new condition and over-the-top wood on the famous pre-64 Model 70 action in a caliber suited for African game is usually an expensive endeavor. We have the Talley QD 1” rings that go with the rifle. We have this rifle priced reasonably and even have some ammunition to go with it.
