Beautiful Cased Daniel Fraser Small Frame Rook Rifle with Scope in .22 Hornet
Description: Serial #1858, .22 Hornet, 26" barrel with a fine, bright bore that has some very mild freckling within the grooves. This is a handsome little takedown rook rifle, probably chambered in .220 Rook originally, that was rechambered to the much more effective .22 Hornet in the 20th century, and has extensive modern Birmingham proofs on the right side of the chamber which date from 1938-39 (the original London proofs are still visible on the left side). The barrel retains nearly all of a maker reapplied blue finish with crisp and clear maker’s address on the matted quarter-rib ahead of the forward scope pad and three-leaf rear sight, "DANL. FRASER & CO. / GUN & RIFLE MANUFACTURERS / 4 LEITH ST. TERRACE EDINBURGH" (Fraser operated at this address from 1878 & 1889). The receiver has extensive scrollwork engraving throughout, and has an overall pewter gray patina with hints of mottled color case-hardening still visible on protected areas. The sliding tang safety has a gold inlay "SAFE" label paired to a red enamel inlay opposite, and even the sides of the trigger are decoratively engraved. The English walnut Alexander Henry type forend has fine checkering with a carved and polished hard rubber tip. The pistol-grip buttstock has a slim oval cheek-piece along with a hard rubber grip cap, checkered hard rubber buttplate, and blank gold escutcheon on the belly just ahead of the single swivel stud. The rifle is accompanied by an original Alexander Henry retailed 4x scope with padded leather eye-cup and double line crosshair reticle with calibrations of 100 & 150 yds for the upper line, and 200 & 250 yds for the lower line. The optics are still clear and the scope mounts well onto the scope pads, but does exhibit a very small amount of lateral play. The rifle and scope are housed in a period oak traveling case, relined with a sky blue baize interior fairly recently. An intact period Alexander Henry paper label is present on the interior of the lid, and the key is included. This is a really handsome and diminutive rifle, made by a great Scottish maker, and chambered in a wonderful small game chambering. It would make a splendid addition to any collection.
