Holland & Holland Sidelock 450/400 2 3/8" Double Rifle
Description: Made in 1884, this is a back-action, top-lever, No. 2 (later called "Dominion") hammerless side lock rifle with unusual bolted locks, tang safety, and crisp slim 26" steel barrels 1:28" twist, extractors, in a fun-to-shoot caliber. Original wood, drops 2.5" - 1 5/8", LOP 14 5/8" thru original lockable steel trapdoor buttplate. Was returned to H&H in 1935 for service/repair. Perkes patent gas check. Perfect bores, bore .399 per maker's log, groove .407 by slugging from breech, regulated for paper patch "long Eley" bullet (probably 255 gr which is more effective than the normal 230gr load) over 3 drams (82 grains) black. You can also shoot 210 grain 41 mag lead pistol bullets thru this rifle all day long over 32.5gr 4198 and dacron. (Paper patch allows the use of a soft lead bullet that expands better on game, but you can also paper patch a .400 cal pistol bullet with the same result.) Brass is made from 348 (2 incl.) or from 450-400, rims thinned, shortened and formed in regular sizing die (6 incl.). Set of CH4D dies incl. Original wood has been refinished/recheckered and comb modified to accept a tang sight. Action has been rejointed (repinned) probably at H&H back in 35, still tight, firing pins bushed, and a dovetail in the rib (possibly for an ancillary sight) has been blanked. Original 3 leaf platinum lined sight present. Tight and light at 7 1/4 lb. Cased in a good quality modern motor case w excerpt from maker's log. Classy boar and woods rifle, and H&H sidelocks don't come any cheaper than this, and not often with bores as clean as this one. Antique: Yes Price: $11,750.00 Contact Seller |
