The Peterlongo .577 Nitro Express Double Rifle represents the pinnacle of post-war Austrian dangerous-game rifle craftsmanship. Built during an era when a handful of Continental gunmakers were producing rifles capable of rivaling the finest British doubles, this magnificent rifle combines immense strength, exquisite workmanship, and the legendary stopping power of the .577 Nitro Express cartridge. Intended for the largest and most dangerous game on earth, it is a true professional hunter's rifle built without compromise.
Manufactured in 1962, this rifle is chambered for the mighty .577 x 3" Nitro Express, one of the most respected dangerous-game cartridges ever developed. For more than a century, the .577 Nitro Express has been trusted by professional hunters, game wardens, and sportsmen pursuing elephant, buffalo, hippo, and other dangerous game throughout Africa and India. Weighing 11 pounds 1.6 ounces, this rifle carries sufficient mass to help manage recoil while remaining lively enough for rapid target acquisition in close quarters.
The rifle is fitted with 25.5-inch Bohler Antinit steel barrels regulated for dangerous-game use and equipped with a traditional matted quarter rib carrying a standing 50-yard express sight and folding 100- and 150-yard leaves. A bead front sight is complemented by a folding night sight, allowing the rifle to remain effective under challenging light conditions.
Mechanically, the rifle is built on an exceptionally robust sideplated, bolstered boxlock action featuring double locking underlugs and a Greener cross-bolt. This combination provides tremendous strength and security, essential when chambered for one of the most powerful sporting cartridges ever created. Additional features include double triggers, ejectors, bushed firing pins, and a non-automatic safety.
A particularly interesting feature is the trigger arrangement. Both front and rear triggers are equipped with push-set functionality, allowing either trigger to be pushed forward and converted into a hair trigger for precise shooting when conditions permit. The triggers themselves are finished in gold, adding an elegant touch to this highly functional dangerous-game rifle.
Condition is described as excellent overall, with the rifle appearing little more than test-fired. The bores are bright with sharp rifling, the action remains smooth and locks up tightly, the ejectors are strong and properly timed, and the triggers are crisp.
The rifle's appearance is equally impressive. The French gray sideplated action is covered with fine scroll engraving executed throughout the receiver. The engraving is tasteful and refined, complementing the rifle's purposeful design without becoming overly ornate.
The stock is crafted from beautifully figured walnut and finished in a traditional English red oil finish. A Monte Carlo comb and right-handed shadow-line cheekpiece provide excellent shooting ergonomics, while the distinctive chinstrap behind the grip cap adds both strength and visual elegance. The sharply executed diamond-point checkering remains crisp throughout the pistol grip and forend.
One particularly thoughtful feature is the beavertail forend with recessed forend release lever. This design protects the shooter's hand from barrel heat during repeated firing while eliminating the discomfort sometimes associated with traditional Deeley-style release mechanisms. Sling swivels are fitted to both the barrels and stock, and a blank initial oval is inlet near the toe line.
Please refer to the photographs for a detailed view of the overall condition.
This is a serious dangerous-game rifle built to the highest standards of Austrian gunmaking. Combining the authority of the .577 Nitro Express, exceptional mechanical strength, deluxe appointments, and remarkable condition, it represents a rare opportunity to acquire a truly world-class double rifle. This Peterlongo offers the same level of craftsmanship, performance, and prestige in a beautifully preserved and Africa-ready package.
