Up for sale is a very rare and fine Presentation WJ Jeffery boxlock extractor double rifle in 450-300 3” caliber manufactured in 1907 as a presentation rifle for Indian Royalty. It has blued chopperlump Krupp steel 24” barrels engraved “W.J Jeffery & Co” and 13 King Street James London”. Barrel flats show original proofs of 400 gr bullet and 55 gr Cordite max. The barrels also feature matted concave rib with ramped bead front sight and rear sight features one standing leaf marked 100 yards and four folding leaves marked 200, 300, 400, 500 yards respectively. The receiver is finished in beautiful case colors and deep bluing featuring game scene engraving of Gaur Buffalo with grassland background in great detail (both sides) as well as profuse scroll engraving all over with makers name in gold on the bottom plate as well as gold “SAFE” under the safety lever. The forearm features case colored hardware and an Anson push release. The Buttstock is beautiful grade walnut with dark horn pistol grip cap and presentation plate inlayed on the right side engraved: “PRESENTED TO PRINCE MADAN SINGHJI OF KUTCH BY THE MIR OF KHAIRPUR”.
This is a beautiful example of old world British gunmaking and harkens back to the golden age of big game hunting. It is chambered in arguably one of the best medium bore double rifle calibers and made by the caliber’s original maker. The 450-400 3” has a strong reputation for being hard hitting for everything up to elephant all the while being a sweet soft shooter.
LOP is 14-3/8" to the front trigger and weight is 10.4 lbs. Overall Excellent+ condition having had an excellent professional vintage restoration done to the finest proper finishes. Both bores are beautiful. Bright and shiny with strong rifling throughout. Stock has some light handling and storage remarks as typical with age. Checkering is crisp and defined.
