This deluxe Ed. Kettner drilling is a fine example of German gunmaking at its peak, combining utility and artistry in one exceptionally versatile firearm. Built on a scalloped boxlock action, it incorporates all the desirable features a sportsman could ask for: double triggers with the front trigger capable of being set to a hair trigger, cocking indicators for all three barrels, Greener cross-bolt, Greener side safety, barrel side clips, and an additional push safety on the top tang. Chambered in 12x12 over 9x57, it is a true “one gun to hunt them all,” suitable for both bird and big game.
The 27" barrels are choked Improved Modified (.033"/.036") in the shotguns, while the rifle barrel shows strong rifling. A matted rib with bead front sight, three flip-up leaf sights, and a flip-up peep sight on the tang provide an array of aiming solutions. At 8 lbs 2 oz, it balances nicely for both quick mounting and steady rifle work.
Condition is very good overall, showing honest wear typical of age and use. The shotgun bores are clear, the rifle bore remains strong, the action locks up tight with its triple locking system, and the triggers are crisp, with the set trigger functioning as intended. The action retains about 40% of its original case color, with tasteful scroll engraving covering about 75% of the surface. The blued barrels are particularly well preserved, retaining 98% of their original finish.
The walnut stock and forend are finely checkered, with a right-handed cheekpiece and steel grip cap. The basketweave checkered horn buttplate completes the gun with traditional detail. Handling marks are present but consistent with age and field use, and the wood retains its elegant presentation.
A very nice drilling in useful and practical calibers, this gun exemplifies the “all-in-one” sporting firearm that German makers excelled at producing. An excellent choice for the collector, the hunter, or both.
