Manufacturer: Theime & Schlegelmilch Suhl Nimrod - Gewehr Fabrik Manufacturer: Theime & Schlegelmilch Location: Suhl, Germany Company Patent Name: Nimrod To those who have been around German guns, Thieme & Schlegelmich - Suhl, is well known as the owners of the trademark "Nimrod". Thieme & Schlegelmilch has been in the firearms business since the 1800's and have built some extraordinary firearms. They have a unique, patented, tapered step in the action flats that mates with a step in the barrel flats that takes the stress off of the hinge pin and other locking mechanisms. Thieme & Schlegelmilch Nimrod – Gewehr – Fabrik Trade Mark “Nimrod” Steinweg Nr.40 in Suhl, Germany In 1835 Caspar Schlegelmilch is recorded as the owner of a “Rohrhammer’, a barrel hammer work at Langebrücke 105 in Suhl.On May 4, 1850 Carl Adolph Thieme and Heinrich Nicolaus Schlegelmilch founded a gun factory at Steinweg 27. They always listed the trade mark “Nimrod” in addition to their names, because there were quite a few gun makers with the same last name Schlegelmilch in Suhl. The name Nimrod was taken from the “Old Testament” and was also called “The great hunter of the Lord”. The Company made a great variety of hunting and sporting guns, including target rifles (Scheibenbüchsen), on actions of their own design. They were granted 8 Patents between 1877 and 1900.All Thieme & Schlegelmilch guns we have seen over the years were of the best quality and had features of their own design. The “Nimrod-Nasenverschluss” is one of their most important patented inventions, so called because of the two nose-shaped protrusions on the underside of the barrels that engaged recesses in the water table of the action and act like recoil shoulders to prevent loosening of the barrels from the action. They serve as additional fasteners besides the traditional Greener bolt on top and the Purdey type bites on the underside and also prevented side to side loosening of the barrels. The company also developed and produced several black powder rifle cartidges and sold loaded ammunition and brass cases. Thieme & Schlegelmilch were one of the founders of the Rhömer Company in Suhl that produced gun components for the various gun makers in Suhl and vicinity. After Ernst Schlegelmilch passed away in 1934, the owner of the Christoph Funk Company bought Thieme & Schlegelmilch for his son Alfred.who managed it until 1937 under the name Nimrod- Gewehrfabrik Thieme & Schlegelmilch. In 1936 the company moved to a new location at Nr.18 Gothaer Strasse. The now very small company did not survive World War II. Much of the information can be found in the book “Suhl-Heimat der Büchsenmacher” by Dr. Hans-Jürgen Fritze. (Not positive if 1927) Gauge & Caliber (3 Barrels) Side to side Barrels Nitro Proof Stamped: 20 ga (2.75" lenght) double barrel shotguns (uses both 2-1/2" & 2-3/4" shells) Under Rifle Barrel : Standard 410 ga Shotgun Slug .....or.....Custom Made: 72/68 German marking for 40 caliber 2-1/2" casing .....(See photo of 10.3 x 68 250 grain lead. Custom Black Powder Bullets using Marlin 444 casing .....Rifle Cartridge was made from wax chamber mould and a fired 410 ga slug.) Details: Light Weight - Only: 7 lb 1.3 oz Barrel Length: 26-3/4 inches Shotgun Barrels: Nitro Proof Stamped Rifle Barrel: 8 Grooves, 1/14 Twist Overall Size: 44 inches which makes it easy to work with in forest conditions. Flip Rear Sights: Flip from Shotgun to Rifle sight. Lenght of Pull: 14-3/4" (Stock butt to front trigger) Stock - Drop at Comb: 1-1/2" Stock - Drop at Heel: 2-3/4" Stock - Comb to Grip: 3-1/2" Stock - Length of Crip: 4-1/2" Stock - Butt Height: 5" Padded Stock for light recoil Sling Mounts Attached: If you ever want to use a sling. Auto Safety: When hammers are in rest position, the hammer cannot be moved forward toward the firing pin. Only when the trigger is pulled, will the hammer be allowed to move forward. When the hammer is fully cocked, the auto safety is off and the gun is ready to fire. Rifle Switch: To fire the lower rifle barrel, there is a convenient switch located on top of the stock. Moving the switch down reveals a "K" marking. The German word "Kugel" (K) means Bullet. The right Hammer and front trigger is used to fire the rifle. Moving the switch up (covering up the "K") puts the right shotgun barrel back into play. Condition: The Drilling is in good condition and is a nice & fun workhorse firearm. Although It never bothered me, as a new owner, you might want a gunsmith to insert a mini wedge to eliminate a tiny side to side barrel looseness. I have already reduced the price for this minor inconvenience that you might or might not want to do. Easy for a Man, Woman or Child to Master The perfect gun for man, woman, or child to easily experience the outdoor joys of the hunting experience with a single firearm to master. It is light weight and handy to use. The padded stock gives it a light recoil (reduced shoulder bruising syndrome), and the overall 44" length makes it easy to swing into the shot no matter how dense the forest or how quick the movement. It is the perfect gun for bird and close-up hunting conditions such as forest and fields where long range scopes are useless. Drillings: Game Keeper's Multi-Purpose Best Friend In Europe a drilling (a 3 barrel) gun is a game keeper's or farmer's best friend to put food on the table, because of it's mixed load capacity, such as bird shot, small game buckshot, and rifled 410 slug deer shot, he/she was prepared for anything that might suddenly move in the woods, jump out of brush, or be startled out of the fields and into the air. After World War I, there were lots of widows that had to put food on the table. A 20 gauge was probably ideal for a farmer's widow or her growing children to use to put rabbits, birds, and the occasional deer or boar on the table. Mixed Use Loads: For deer hunting you might want to load a 410 slug (lower rifle barrel), for distance, the left chamber (.612 caliber) 20 ga slug for closer range power, and in the right chamber 20 ga buck shot for really close or dense conditions. Manufacture Date: Pre-War. I am not sure, but it was probably made around 1927 (pictures of gun markings available if not already shown here). The Drilling's Last 1/2 Century History: When I was a boy, we were stationed in Europe in the early 60's. My father, an avid hunter, fisherman and Pearl Harbor survivor, purchased this German drilling for me so he could take me hunting with him. Although we had a gun cabinet full of rifles and shotguns, this was always my favorite, because of the ease of handing and convenience (and I must admit, it looks really cool). No matter what season (pheasant, duck, quail, dove, deer or boar), all I needed to do is grab my drilling, shell & game bag, and run out the door, and I was ready to go hunting with him on a moments notice. Personally, I like bird hunting the best because you have more opportunities to shoot. Over the years, I experimented with my dad's other 12 & 16 gauge shotguns, but found I was much luckier with my 20 gauge drilling than with the larger gauges. An additional bonus was I didn't have the typical painful shoulder bruise after a day of blasting away. My drilling has always been lucky for me. In my dad's later years when his sight was failing, he looked forward to when I took him bird hunting. During dove season, we spent most weekends blasting away and having a good time together. I know he loved every minute of it, as much as I did when he took me hunting with him. New Master Wanted. Why I am Selling 50+ years later, now my eyes are weakening with cataracts so I no longer hunt. With no kids to leave it to, I am selling it. I will always have fond memories for my drilling, but now it time for this wonderful old drilling to find a new home, not as a hidden away show piece, but used as a trusted workhorse tool that will build trophy memories for it new master. Payments Accepted: Cash/Visa/MC/Discover/AMEX. Money Order & Checks must clear before delivery. Sold as is. A Firearm Bill of Sale will be provided to fill out. Shipping: Shipping available to your FFL for an extra fee to cover shipping cost. I would prefer to meet with you personally and show you the drilling so you can see that it is in good working order, and why I loved hunting with it (and maybe swap a few hunting tales). Rare Lucky (Male or Female) Gun in Good Working Order. Perfect for a beginner boy or girl, experienced adult, or a senior tired of complaining about a buised shoulder.
