The J. Albrecht sidelock drilling, produced in 1931 in Detmold, Germany, is a finely crafted pre-war sporting arm that exemplifies the ingenuity and artistry of traditional German gunmaking. Chambered in 12 gauge (2.5") over 12 gauge (2.5") with an 8x57 JR rifle barrel, this drilling offers exceptional versatility—capable of handling birds, small game, and large game within a single, elegantly integrated platform.
Built on a true sidelock drilling action, it features double triggers (with the front functioning as a set trigger), a side safety, and a cocking side-lever for the rifle barrel—hallmark features of high-quality German combination guns. The 25.625" barrels are choked Full (.034") and Extra Full (.048"), indicating a configuration intended for longer-range shotgun work, while the rifle barrel is paired with a flip-up rear sight automatically actuated by the side lever, ensuring seamless transition between shotgun and rifle operation. Weighing 7 lb 15.8 oz, the gun carries substantial presence while maintaining practical field balance.
This example is in fine condition, particularly for a pre-WWII firearm. The barrels retain approximately 95% professionally refinished blue, with only minor underlying pitting visible and some light surface wear. The action and sidelocks display an attractive gray patina with traces of original case color in protected areas, and the engraving remains sharp and well-defined. The wood is also fine, showing scattered handling marks and a restored oil finish that complements the gun’s character. Mechanically, it is excellent, with smooth operation and proper function throughout.
The engraving is especially noteworthy, with full coverage fine scrollwork and detailed game scenes across the action and lockplates. The right side features scenes of rabbits and stag, while the left side depicts ducks, roe deer, and a hound, all executed with classic German precision and composition. The barrels are marked “J. Albrecht / Detmold”, and German nitro proofs dated to 1931 are present, along with caliber and bore markings.
The rifle is stocked in checkered walnut with a raised cheekpiece, an “AK” monogrammed grip cap, and a serrated horn buttplate, all consistent with a high-grade pre-war drilling. The top lever serves as the break mechanism, while the left-side lever cocks the rifle barrel—an elegant and mechanically sophisticated system typical of deluxe German designs.
Please refer to the photographs for a detailed view of the overall condition.
A true deluxe pre-WWII drilling, this J. Albrecht represents a blend of craftsmanship, artistry, and functional versatility that is rarely matched—making it equally appealing to collectors, hunters, and enthusiasts of fine European sporting arms.
