German Drilling rifle/Shotgun Underlever 16ga/8mmJR
Description: Serial #4047, 16 ga./8mm JR, 28" barrels with very good, lightly freckled bores. This is an ingenious design which utilizes Adolph Frank's 1894 patent for a removable and interchangeable rifle barrel which can be swapped out for different chamberings or removed altogether for bird hunting. The barrels retain 80-85% of the original blue which has faded to gray in spots and silvered at the muzzles as well. There are some minor areas of freckling here and there as well as a single small spot of pinprick pitting at the breech of the right tube. The barrels have a wide matted rib with flip-up, U-notch rear barrel sight (a second flip-up, adjustable lollipop sight on the top wrist tang is also present) and engraved doll's head extension while the frame and the back-action locks have typical Germanic foliate engraving with intertwined game scenes and motifs. Originally, the extractor used a fragile and complicated hinge arrangement to facilitate barrel removal but this example has been simplified by detaching it completely and friction fitting the extractor to slide along its mortises (it should be noted that the extractor functions perfectly as it is now configured). Now to remove the rifle barrel one simply opens the gun, withdraws the extractor from the breech face, and pushes rearward on the muzzle. The metal has turned a fairly uniform bright gray over time but traces of the original color case-hardening can still be seen around the hammers and some original nitre blue is still present on the rifle selector lever. The checkered walnut forend and buttstock with rounded continental cheek-piece have some flattening of the points as well as a few minor handling marks and small surface blemishes scattered about the otherwise excellent oil finish. The lock-up is still tight and the action is fully functional, both as a shotgun and rifle. The length of pull is 13 3/4" (to the original and intact “CHG" hard rubber buttplate) with drops of 1 1/2" and 2 3/4". The gun is housed in an unmarked, mid-20th century brown leather traveling case that has a fairly bright green cloth-lined interior that has a detached compartment cover (still present) and also has copies of Frank's patent as well as a recent article about the unique construction and features of these well-made and handy sporting arms.
