Hubertus Vierling on Duralyt Frame - 16 Gauge/8x57JR/22 LR
Description: Unique pre-war four-barrel rifle made by Hubertus with desirable light weight frame. The “Duralyt” (aluminum) frame makes this rifle almost as light as many 3-barrel drillings made during this time. Unlike many rifles brought to the US after World War II, this rifle retains its original scope – a WWI vintage 4X W. Bischoff in its original mount and rings. This rifle looks up tight, and the barrels pass the “ring” test, confirming the barrels are still joined as properly as they were when proofed in November, 1937. The 8x57r barrel (.318 bore) is in very good condition, with just a trace of the oxidation that is common to these guns built in the final decades of the use of corrosive primers. The extractor on this gun even includes a plunger for using rimless (8x57) brass!! The 16 gauge barrels are in excellent condition, with the typical IM/Full choke preferred by German hunters then and now. The .22 barrel show some roughness, typical for period guns again shooting corrosive ammo. Unlike many of the “bringbacks” from Europe after the war that languished in attics and basements for many years, this rifle was loved by its veteran owner that brought it here to the US, and hunted extensively both east and out west for deer, elk and small game. Used, but not abused, the buttstock has been repaired from what appears to be a tumble while hunting – please examine the photos closely. The scope mount is not the "typical" claw mount of the period, but one instead that allows use of the iron sights with the scope mounted! The clamping lever for the scope mount could stand to be tightened up a bit, to the degree the new owner desires. The rifle features set triggers for both rifle barrels, and a unique “night” front sight consisting of a large ivory bead for use in low light conditions that can be folded back down into the rib when not needed. If this rifle can be any more unique, it carries provenance from the US Army soldier that brought it back with the approval paperwork from his command. This is a rarity today for any of the tens of thousands of firearms brought back by our GI’s after the war. Vierlings are a rarity here in the US, and ones with documented provenance are almost never encountered.
