The Jos. Michaeli drilling, produced in Germany in 1923, is a classic example of traditional German gunmaking—combining the versatility of a double shotgun with a rifle barrel in one elegant and highly functional platform. Chambered in 20 gauge (2.5") over 20 gauge (2.5") with a 6.5x70R rifle barrel, this three-barrel configuration was designed to handle a wide range of hunting situations, from small game and birds to larger game requiring precise rifle fire. The gun features 27.875" barrels with the shotgun tubes choked Improved Cylinder (.004") and Cylinder, making it ideal for close-range shooting, while the rifle barrel is paired with a flip-up rear sight that is automatically engaged via the tang safety when switching to rifle mode. The action is a robust boxlock design incorporating double triggers, a Greener side safety, tang-mounted safety, Greener cross-bolt, and barrel side clips, all contributing to strength and reliability. The front trigger can be pushed forward to function as a set (hair) trigger for precise rifle shooting. Weighing 7 lb 2.1 oz, it remains well-balanced for such a versatile firearm. This example is in good overall condition, showing wear consistent with its age. The shotgun bores are clear, and the rifle bore is also clear with strong rifling. The action is smooth and locks up tight, and the triggers are crisp. The case-colored receiver retains traces of its original finish and is extensively decorated with rose and scroll engraving, giving the gun a refined, traditional appearance. The blued barrels show wear as pictured. The walnut stock and forend feature strong checkering and are fitted with a horn buttplate and pistol grip cap, maintaining the classic German aesthetic. Please refer to the photographs for a detailed view of the overall condition. A highly functional and historically significant sporting arm, this Michaeli drilling embodies the ingenuity of early 20th-century German hunting guns—offering versatility, craftsmanship, and timeless appeal in a single package.
