1916 Gew 98 ALL MATCHING
Description: The rifle pictured here is a very fine example of the standard German Infantry Rifle of World War I. It was manufactured in 1916 and it has all matching serial numbers right down to the screws. DWM manufactured many of the rifles that were later selected for sniper service. DWM had amazing production equipment and those that own the Lugers or Broomhandles that were produced there can attest to the fine workmanship out of that particular factory. Paul Mauser developed the Gew 98 in 1898 and it is the definitive benchmark of controlled round feed actions. Commerically, it is known as the Mauser 98. This one is of course chambered in 7.92 x 57 commonly known as 8mm Mauser. The S stamping on the barrel denotes it was reworked to fire the modified infantry round with the spitzer bullet for better ballistics. It features the correct roller coaster rear sight serialzed to the rifle. The bolt shroud, safety, claw extractor, bolt handle, floor plate, magazine follower, butt plate, and barrel bands are all original and serialized to the rifle. The action has developed a nice warm patina, and the barrel is holding onto 80% of its original finish. The stock is in great shape, and it features proof marks / crown on both the right side and wrist of the stock. It also has the correct cleaning rod. This rifle is a fantastic investment piece. Due to the fact that it is all matching it will appreciate in value. It is getting harder and harder to find rifles like this one! After all it is 105 years old and survived a World War! The bonus to owning this piece is that you can shoot it and not worry about that depreciating the value of the rifle. The barrel has strong rifling and is in excellent shape. 8mm Mauser isn't a slouch of a cartridge either. This rifle has a 29 inch barrel and can push a 200 grain Nosler Partition at 2650 fps. That is a great round for deer, elk, bear or hogs. With the cleaning rod intact, its an interesting rifle for a multi day hunt in the backcountry. For those that have ever had snow or mud ruin a hunt due to not having a cleaning rod this design is the original solution. For a guy who enjoys shooting his rifles and has good vision.. the roller coaster sight will pack em and stack em at 400 yards. Its an interesting piece for both the World War I collector and the guy who likes the challenge of hunting the backcountry with open sights. Don' t let this one pass you up!
