Custom DWM Model 1898 Mauser Benchrest Rifle 6.5x54 Mannlicher-Schonauer Lyman 10x scope
Description: The Mauser Model 1898 is one of the most famous military rifles in history and probably one of the most well-known worldwide. The ‘98 has seen action in two world wars and has been widely copied by other nations in various forms. The British Pattern 1914, the American M1903 Springfield and Enfield M1917, and the Japanese Types 38 and 99 are all variations of the ’98 though they have their differences. Other users of the ’98 (German built or license production) include China, Spain, Turkey, Poland, Yugoslavia, Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Peru, and many others. Due to the fine qualities of the Mauser rifle, many rifles post war were rebuilt into hunting or target rifles. This rifle is an exceptional example of those that fall into the latter category. This is a benchrest rifle built on a Gewehr M1898 action produced originally by DWM. While the caliber is not stamped anywhere on the rifle, our store’s gunsmith performed a chamber casting to determine which cartridge the rifle is chambered for. The results lead us to believe the rifle is chambered for the legendary 6.5x54 Mannlicher-Schonauer cartridge. This was a fairly popular hunting and target round back in the day. It was the first choice for WDM “Karamojo” Bell, a famous adventurer and hunter in Africa in the early 20th Century. The high sectional density of the long and heavy (160gr) round-nosed bullets gave the cartridge the ability to penetrate deeply through muscle and bone. Precise placing of the shot was required of course, as such a small caliber required a direct hit on the heart or brain to be effective. The 6.5x54 was also used in the Greek Mannlicher-Schonauer M1903 rifle for most of the Greek military’s most active years in the 20th Century. The rifle here is fitted with a 31-inch long heavy barrel roughly 0.866 inches or 22 millimeters in diameter. The bore is in mint shape and should provide the shooter with excellent accuracy. Controls consist of set triggers and the usual Mauser 3-position safety. The finish of the rifle remains in excellent shape. It is possible the receiver was re-blued at point though this is not verified. As with most military Mauser rifles, the parts are non-matching. The bolt exhibits minor micro-pitting in places which could fixed with a little Flitz polish. The triggers could use some polishing as well. The bottom of the trigger guard is minimally engraved. The scope is a Lyman “Targetspot” 10x. It is designed to be reminiscent of the old Unertl scopes, in this case, the fixed, or non-recoiling type. It has been positioned a little father forward than usual to allow for the bolt to be operated. The scope body exhibits some finish wear on the sides. The wood stock features a tall, integral cheek rest that is professionally cut out in the center to allow for full travel movement of the bolt. Overall condition of the stock is very good. A vent rubber recoil pad was added at some point. This was a poor choice as the rifle’s weight of 16.0 lbs. already makes recoil negligible. Unfortunately for the recoil pad, the rifle was rested on its butt pad long enough for the rifle’s weight to illustrate why vent recoil pads are a bad idea. They simply collapse under enough weight or recoil force (over time). A solid rubber pad would have been a better choice, though again, the rifle’s weight makes any pad unnecessary. Fortunately, the rest of the rifle is in good shape. There is a small metal tag tied to the trigger guard indicating this rifle was originally part of the J.M. Davis Arms Historical Museum located in Claremore, Oklahoma. This was at one time one of the largest collections of firearms in the U.S. with over 20,000 guns in the collection.
