**SOLD** Enfield Martini Henry Mark IV No.1 Rifle in .577/450 Martini Caliber **Mfg 1887 - Antique**
Description: **SOLD** Here we have an Enfield Martini Henry MarkIV No.1 rifle in .577/450 blackpowder caliber. The Martini-Henry was a breech-loading, single-shot, lever-actuated rifle adopted by the British Army, combining the dropping-block action first developed by Henry O. Peabody (in his Peabody rifle) and improved by the Swiss designer Friedrich von Martini, whose work in bringing the cocking and striker mechanism all within the receiver greatly improved the operation of the rifle, this new mechanism was then combined with the polygonal barrel rifling designed by Scotsman Alexander Henry. It first entered service in 1871 and in its various incarnations was used throughout the British Empire for 30 years. The Martini-Henry was the first rifle designed from the outset as a breech-loader and was both easier to use and had a longer range than any of its predecessors. The Mk.IV was the last variant to be produced ending production in 1889 but it remained in service throughout the British Empire until the end of WW1 and as late as 2011 was found in several Taliban arms caches in Afghanistan. The .577/450 Martini–Henry is a black powder, centrefire rifle cartridge. It was the standard British service cartridge from the early 1870s that went through two changes from the original brass foil wrapped case (with 14 parts) to the drawn brass of two parts, the case and the primer. The .577/450 Martini–Henry was introduced with the Martini–Henry, in service it succeeded the .577 Snider cartridge and was used by all arms of the British armed forces as well British colonial forces throughout the British Empire until it was itself succeeded by the .303 British cartridge after an unsuccessful trial of a .402 calibre. This particular example has honest wear from centuries and decades of use.....some pressure marks, high edge wear and handling marks exist on the rifle but everything works. The 32" barrel still has a good bore and rifling. Sights are a ramped front and adjustable rear. Metal buttplate. This is truly a historical piece that would be a great addition to a collection. We do have ammo in stock. PRICE: $1325.00 We are Antique & Modern Firearms in Lexington, KY, a dealer of fine firearms since 1974. PH. 859-276-1419 We Buy, Sell, and Trade Firearms & Knives.
