BRITISH Antique SNIDER-ENFIELD Gurkha Rifle
Description: BRITISH Antique SNIDER-ENFIELD Gurkha Rifle Lock Marked “TOWER” & Dated “1852” Here we present an antique Snider-Enfield Breech Loading Rifle, made circa the late 1860s. Rifles like this were once lost in perpetual storage in the Langan Silekhana palace in Katmandu, Nepal. They were placed there along with many other British arms and munitions encompassing centuries of history. This rifle is one that the British supplied to the Nepalese government after the Anglo-Nepalese War (1814-16). This war begun as Nepal attempted to expand its territory into Northern India, which was at that time colonized by the British East India Company. Two years of brutal fighting brought an end and a compromise and Nepal became an ally of sorts in the region. The British Army was given permission to recruit Gurkhas, a practice that goes on to this day. The Gurkhas have a well-established track record as excellent warriors now as then. This rifle would have seen use from the late 1860s through the end of the 19th Century. It features a lock marked “TOWER” and dated “1852”. The cipher on the tail of the lock is that of Queen Victoria (CROWN/V.R. for Victoria Regina). The butt plate, barrel tang and trigger guard bear Nepalese markings. The leather sling is original and in good shape. This rifle has the latch system of the Mark III Snider-Enfield. The overall condition is good. Most of the rifle is covered in a dark crust of old oil and dust collected over the course of a century in storage. The markings are clear. The stock shows the use you would expect and remains solid. The bore is sharp and semi-bright. The action is strong. Here is a well-preserved piece of British-Asian history! Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 36-1/2 inches. Caliber: .577 Snider Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE. Delivered directly to your door by express mail! Guaranteed AUTHENTIC & Includes CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY. ancestryguns $1350 #6049 SOLD Antique: Yes |
