Canadian SMLE Mk. IV* .22 Conversion Rifle Officers Training Corps Markings
Description:
Serial #L88943, .22 LR, 25" barrel with an excellent, bright bore. This was originally a WW1 SMLE Mk. III by LSA and is dated 1914 on the wrist socket. The metal retains 90-92% of an armory re-applied blue finish with silvering at the high edges and projections, as well as along the bearing surfaces of the matching numbered bolt, which also has some plum-brown freckling on the handle. The .22 caliber barrel is BSA marked on the knox form, and there are both British and Canadian military proofs on the receiver ring. The original tangent sight is still present, however a C broad arrow Marked .22 adjustable aperture rear sight is installed on the left side of the receiver behind the bridge.
The right rear sight ear has "W.P." stamped on it. We are not sure of the meaning. The wood has numerous minor handling marks and surface blemishes scattered throughout, and original blue remains on the volley sight range plate on the left side of the forend. A single with-the-grain crack is present on the left side of the forend running up from the wrist socket through the trigger pin. The nosecap has a matching number on the tip, and there is a crisply marked brass disk on the right side: "1/36 / A COY. / D.C.O.T.C. / 11." (A Company / Dominion of Canada Officer Training Corps / 11). A correct magazine housing without spring or follower is present. This is a fine-near excellent Canadian .22 training rifle conversion, and would make a splendid addition to any collection. FFL or C&R
