Canadian Snider Mk. II** Cadet Carbine
Description: NSN, .577 Snider, 18” barrel with a very good, bright bore that has some mild freckling within the grooves. This was originally an 1859 dated rifle that still has extensive War Department markings throughout and “(crown)/VR” cypher on the lockplate. These were shortened to carbine length by Canada after the Snider was rendered obsolete and given a shotgun style bead in place of a front sight blade, the ramrod channels filled, and were issued to cadets well into the 20th century. The barrel and receiver have an overall dark plum-brown and mottled dark gray patina with scattered areas of mild freckling and gray fading at the muzzle and other projecting edges and surfaces. Mild pinprick pitting and light surface blemishes are present on and around the LSA marked breechblock and the lockplate and hammer have acquired a lighter gray patina with mottled dark freckling over time. The brass trigger guard and buttplate have an overall mild yellow-ochre patina with dark brown mottled spots scattered throughout and the swivel has been removed from the trigger guard. The walnut stock has a pleasant added oil finish over scattered handling marks and surface blemishes throughout and there is a straight, with-the-grain crack on the right side of the toe. The cartouches and “DC” Dominion of Canada stamp are soft, but legible, and a past owner has carefully carved his name into the left side of the forearm: “H. C. McINTYRE/JUNE 1. 1908”. This is a good looking Canadian Cadet Snider, in very good overall condition and would make a nice example of a rather scarce variant for any collection. {Ref. “The Snider-Enfield Rifle” (Historical Arms Series No. 24) by Charles J. Purdon; 1990} Antique SOLD Manufacturer: Enfield Model: Snider Caliber Info: .577 Gauge Info: .577 |
