Lee-Enfield Carbine Mk. I (Canadian M&D, RNWMP, and Prison Marked)
Description: Serial #536, .303 British, 20 3/4" barrel with an excellent, bright bore. This is an 1896 dated carbine and retains about 75% of the original blue with the balance turning to a mellow plum-brown patina with some fading at the muzzle, as well as along the exposed edges. The bolt is matching numbered, and has some silvering along the bearing surfaces as well as a small amount of fading along the edges of the handle, and on the cocking-piece. Crisp military acceptance proofs are present at the breech of the “E" marked, Enfield-rifled barrel. The walnut stock, forend, and handguard have an added armory varnish over numerous small handling marks and minor surface blemishes while the British military cartouche and Canadian “M & D" stamp (Militia & Defence) on the right side are still clearly legible. The brass disk has a crisp unit stamp: “CGAC / 38" (Canadian Garrison Artillery); and a further “RNWMP" roundel with issue number (“593") which indicates removal from military stores and issue to the Royal North West Mounted Police. Furthermore, the carbine is surcharged on the wrist “KP" which indicates that the gun was then issued to guards at the Kingston Penitentiary, Ontario, after it had been withdrawn from police service. A 1990 dated letter from RCMP historian Roger Phillips is included with the carbine that explains that 1,000 carbines were removed from military stores and issued to the RNWMP in 1914. The guns fell in the serial number range: 6 - 9965, and, according to the letter, “All Lee Enfield carbines bearing the RNWMP oval stamp and an issue number must be assumed to be authentic Force issued arms". This is an excellent, antique Lee-Enfield with military, RNWMP, and prison markings. It would make a splendid example for any collection of British and Canadian military or police arms.
