Serial #2170M, .303 British, 30 1/4" barrel with a very good bore that has light freckling within the grooves. This is an 1898-dated, Enfield-made rifle that retains 50-60% of the original blue finish, with the balance faded to a mellow plum-brown patina and gray fading along the edges and projections. The matching numbered bolt retains a similar amount of original blue, and has some minor freckling on the cocking-piece, as well as some silvering on the handle. The receiver has a large "E" stamp on the knox form, as well as the original volley sights and magazine cut-off still in place. The walnut stock, forend, and handguard have numerous small handling marks and minor surface blemishes in the added varnish finish. The remnants of some rudimentary checkering are still visible on the left side of the wrist. The original magazine is still chained to the receiver. The right side of the buttstock is relief-carved: "(1899 / 1900 / 1901) F.R. Leach / BOER WAR / SOUTH AFRICA". Pvt. Frederick Roger Leach was a volunteer in the 3rd Victorian Bushman’s Contingent (raised in 1899, left Australia for South Africa in March of 1900, returning to Melbourne in June of 1901). Little is known about Pvt. Leach, but his occupation was listed as "Trapper". This rifle is pictured and described on pg. 107 of "Carvings From The Veldt" by Dave C, George; (2004). This is a splendid, Boer War identified, Australian-issued rifle, and would make a stellar addition to any collection. Antique
