Snider Enfield MkIII, Short Rifle, Dominion of
Canada issue.
Description:
.577 Martini-Henry caliber, 30" barrel secured by two bands. Snider Enfield MkIII, Short Rifle, Caliber .577, dated 1872,
as issued to the 30th Wellington Battalion of Rifles, raised in 1866
in response the Fenian Raids (1866-1871) and headquartered in Guelph,
Ontario. The rifle bears the proper Dominion of Canada DC/diamond on
the left side of the butt, accompanied to the right by the number
’30’ designating the battalion. The right side of the butt bears
the Enfield rondel, below which appears the 1st-class arms mark. Just
outside this grouping appears to be another unit designation marking.
The tang of the butt plate bears the same battalion marking and the
stand of arms number (‘rack number’) ‘612’
