South African Long Lee Enfield Rifle 303 British
Description: Serial #89665, MK1* .303 British, 30" barrel with a good bore that has moderate freckling within the grooves. This is a 1902 dated, BSA-made rifle that has about 85-90% of a modern, re-applied blue finish that has faded in a few spots on the receiver, and silvered slightly along the high edges and projections. The receiver has crisp BSA markings on the knox form, and a deep “U/(Broad Arrow)" Union of South Africa property stamp on the receiver ring. The bolt is not numbered, and has had the knob partially shaped, possibly as preparation for further conversion into a sporting rifle. The barrel band and nosecap have a slightly duller added blue finish, while the magazine has a generally plum-brown patina. The magazine cut-off is still present, but the volley sights have been removed. The walnut stock and forend are in good-very good overall condition with scattered minor surface scuffs and blemishes throughout, but heaviest on the buttstock which also has a flattened area on the right side just behind a crudely carved “B". The sear is present, but is currently fixed in the down position which does not allow it to engage the cocking-piece. This is nice, seldom-seen, South African “Long Lee" in about good condition, and would make a fabulous candidate for restoration.
