Very Nice B.S.A. Co. 1914 SMLE SHT Lee Enfield No. 1 Mk III* Mark 3*, .303 British
Description: For sale is a very nice B.S.A. Co. 1914 SMLE (Short Magazine Lee Enfield) No. 1 Mark III* chambered in .303 British. Like most British military rifles, this rifle is covered with proofs and markings telling the story of where it has been over the last 100+ years, many of which I am unfamiliar with, but I will do my best to describe it. The right side of the buttsocket is marked (Crown), G.R., B.S.A. Co., 1914, SHT L.E., III*. The crown and the G.R. are a tribute to King George V, ruler of the UK and British Dominions (also Emperor of India) when this Short Magazine Lee Enfield Mark III* was made in 1914 by the Birmingham Small Arms Company. This Enfield has matching serial numbers, V9994, on the receiver, bolt handle, rear sight, and bayonet lug. The forend has a non-matching serial number, most likely having been replaced at some point during the rifle's lifetime. There is also a "FTR" (Factory Thorough Repair) proof on the receiver above the serial number along with a "MA/54" proof on the left side of the buttsocket, indicating that this rifle made a stop at the Lithgow Arsenal in New South Wales, Australia. This is likely where the rifle underwent factory repairs and possibly where the forend was replaced. The rifle is also etched on the left side of the bolt assembly "No. 1 GREAT BRITAIN TO KNOX TN 303 BRITISH", referencing its importation to the US. The rifle is in overall good-very good condition, with a few light dings/handling marks and some finish wear consistent with its age. The 25" barrel has an excellent, shiny bore with strong rifling. The English walnut stock and forend present very nicely, showing the expected light dings and mild abrasions from the rifle's many years of service. All of the original proofs and markings remain strong and clear. The hardware is also in good shape, with a few of the screw heads having some minor slot wear. The action is smooth and everything functions as it should. Overall this is a very nice example of British military history that would make an excellent addition to any collection. It comes from a large estate of British military rifles, many of which will be listed in the very near future. Feel free to call or text with any questions or for more pictures.
