Description: WORLD WAR II Era B.S.A. SHIRLEY Enfield No. 4 Mk 1* C&R .303 INFANTRY Rifle BRITISH MILITARY Rifle with BAYONET & SCABBARD Here we present a C&R Birmingham Small Arms (B.S.A.) Enfield No. 4 Mk1* Rifle, made in 1942 at the B.S.A. Plant in Shirley, which was a suburb of Birmingham. In England, two new Royal Ordnance Factories (ROF) were established to manufacture the No. 4 rifle. One at Fazakerley (a suburb of Liverpool) and one at Maltby (near Sheffield). In addition, BSA Co. built a plant in Shirley to manufacture the No. 4 rifle. Production was under way at these plants by the middle of 1941, well into World War II. The British No. 4 rifle was a development of the Short, Magazine Lee-Enfield Rifle. It featured a heavier, flat sided body, a heavier barrel, and an aperture rear sight. The No. 4 was approved for service in November of 1939, but due to the difficulties of setting up production in new factories, it didn’t see large scale production until early 1942. After that point, it became the primary British and Canadian infantry weapon. As mentioned above, production took place at the Royal Ordnance Factories at Fazakerley and Maltby, along with the BSA’s plant at Shirley and in the USA & Canada. In the late 1940s, production ceased at the BSA-Shirley facility. Somewhere around 1950, the rifle fabrication machinery was sold to the Pakistan Ordnance Factory in Wah, Pakistan. The Pakistan Ordnance Factory (P.O.F.) undertook an extensive “Factory Thorough Repair” (FTR) program, refurbishing a good many No. 4 MK1 rifles. This involved various improvement including the replacement of simplified wartime rear sights with the MK1 sight which had originally been intended for this rifle. The overall condition is good. Strong, smooth action. Bright bore with deep rifling. Solid stock with an average amount of wear (minor dents and dings from use) and contains a repair atop the comb near the buttplate tang. “1942” dated. The screwdriver bayonet is in good shape. Marks on the left side of the receiver are worn and are only partially legible. This firearm is classified as a Curio & Relic. Barrel is 25 inches.
