WW1 1916 B.S.A. Co. Enfield SMLE Mk.III* in .303 British w/ Original Sling
** All-Matching WW1 British Military Rifle ** SOLD
Description: The British SMLE (Short Magazine Lee Enfield) Military rifle and it's variants are perhaps the most famous rifle of the British Military of all-time. Introduced in 1902 as the SMLE Mk.1, the SMLE went thru many changes during it's long service life as the main battle rifle of the British Army thru World War 1 and 2, and which continues even today to a small degree. This particular example is a SMLE Mk.III* made by the Birmingham Small Arms company in 1916 for service in World War 1. It has been thru at least one British arsenal overhaul, but is an all-matching and "original" weapon otherwise. The SMLE Mk.III* variation does not have a magazine cut-off, a rear sight windage adjustment, auxiliary long-range sights, or a brass buttstock marking disc. These features were deemed not necessary and removed for speedier and cheaper manufacturing in a time of war, when production had to be maximized. Over 2 million of these rifles were built during World War 1 between the factories in Britain, Austrailia, and India. This B.S.A. Co. rifle is a very attractive rifle and is in 100% perfect working order. The original blue/black finish has developed a nice even patina, showing some finish wear and handling marks consistent with a battle-used and issued rifle but no heavy wear or major damage. All of the stamped serial numbers match on this rifle, with the bolt arsenal scrubbed and re-numbered to match likely sometime after World War 1. This rifle was imported by Century Arms and as you can see in the pictures, it is import marked in very small lettering on the right side of the receiver. As far as import marks go, it is a very unobtrusive marking that does not stand out unless you are looking for it. The bore in this SMLE is in good condition, showing nice strong rifling with clean lands but slightly dark grooves. This rifle should still shoot very accurately if the new owner so chooses. The original stock set is also in good shape and is consistent in condition with the rest of the rifle. There are some minor handling marks and wear showing that you would expect, and an arsenal repair on the short top handguard closest to the receiver. All of the wood matches each other nicely and is tight to the gun with no wiggle. It has obviously been together for a very long time, arsenal rebuild or not. As mentioned earlier, all of the controls on this rifle are in perfect working order, and the bolt works smoothly in the action, turning into battery perfectly. This B.S.A. Co. SMLE Mk.III* comes with an original British Military sling already mounted up. If you have been looking for a nice all-matching original World War 1 SMLE here is your chance to get a great example. This rifle would be a great addition to any Military Arms collection. SOLD Curio/Relic: Yes Manufacturer: B.S.A. Co.
