WW2 Australian No.1 Mk.3* SMLE Rifle Shortened
Description: Serial #C86429, .303 British, 17 1/2" barrel with a very good bore that has some light-moderate freckling within the grooves. This is a 1941 dated rifle that has been converted to carbine length, probably by the Australian government during WW2. The rifle has non-matching numbers on the nosecap (which has unusual knurling on the edges of the front sight wings), a mismatched bolt, and a “10 42" date on the barrel breech and a faint "1942" stamped into the buttstock.. The metal retains 80-85% of a dull blue finish that has silvered at the muzzle, as well as along the high edges and projections. Spots of mild freckling are also present throughout. The buttstock has a large chip and further hairline crack where it meets the wrist socket, sanded, but still legible, markings on the right side of the butt (including a “1942") date, and the much-shortened forward handguard also has a large chip on the right rear. The rear handguard is no longer present. A single magazine is included. Examples of these shortened SMLEs are known, all with 1942 rework dates, and seem to be an attempt to make a short rifle suitable for jungle fighting along the lines of the No. 5 Jungle Carbine (Australia and India never produced the No. 4 rifles that served as the base for the Jungle Carbine). Unfortunately, very little information is available but the quality of the work points to this being a legit WW2 shortened rifle. Make your own determination.
