Here we present an antique Evans New Model Rifle produced by the Evans Repeating Rifle Company of Mechanics Falls, Maine. This rifle would have originally been the “Military Model”. Like many others, it was converted to the “Sporting Model” sometime later in life. Frequently referred to as “one of the most novel repeating rifles of the 19th century”, this .44 caliber centerfire carbine was manufactured between 1873 and 1879. It had a total of 12,200 Evans rifles and carbines made, with 3,000 being the “Sporting” model. The New Model rifle and carbine, which is not serialized, utilized a revolving type magazine with a full capacity of 28, .44 caliber metallic rounds loaded through the butt of the 30” long round barrel. The hammer is mounted on the underside of the frame, just ahead of the breech lever and was manually cocked. The frame is rounded at the top and has no cut outs on the side. The forend fits square to the receiver front while the dust cover sits over the loading aperture. The forend is secured to the barrel via a single barrel band sling swivel.

The Evans repeating rifle enjoys the distinction of being the only mass-produced firearm ever attempted in the state of Maine. It also holds the greatest capacity of any repeating lever action rifle ever produced and marketed in the United States.

The overall condition is very good. The action is strong and tight. The bore is bright with excellent rifling. Blue finish with gray patina. This example has been tagged by the previous owner with labels reading "EVANS MILITARY RIFLE/MODEL-1877/MODIFIED FOR INDIAN TRADE" on the right side of the butt. We left it on there but it may be removed easily at the next owner’s discretion.
