Description:
Evans Repeating Rifle New Model Carbine. 22” round barrel, .44 New Model caliber. The lever action operated rifle has a radial block receiver with rounds fed from a magazine within the rifle stock that holds 26 rounds. The fluted cartridge carrier makes a quarter turn each time the lever was operated, feeding a new cartridge into the breech. The new model Evans rifle uses the 1 1/2” case known as the “.44 New Model” cartridge. The Evans rifle has the greatest magazine capacity (26 rounds) of any rifle mass-produced in the 19th Century with approx. 15,000 manufactured between 1873 and 1879. Only 4000 New Model Carbines were produced.
The condition is good overall. The rifle is mechanically functional. The bore is very good with sharp lands and grooves, no pitting or rust. Cosmetically, the rifle has some period dings and dents in the stock consistent with age. The barrel has acquired minor brown speckling in areas but retains 90% of the original blueing. The receiver is in similar condition. The buttplate retains 90% of its original color case hardening. The front sling swivel is missing from the barrel band. The ladder sight is missing its adjustment slide and one of the screws holding it to the barrel. The other screw shows signs of manipulation. The screw holding the buttplate to the rear loading magazine stock on the right-hand side is also missing.
The rifle is adorned with a series of small brass tacks on both sides of the forestock and buttstock. This was a common Native American practice found on many firearms of this period and is believed to be authentic. Manufactured Circa 1877- 1879.
