**SOLD** Vintage FN Egyptian Military Contract FN-49 Battle Rifle in 8mm Mauser
** All-Matching & Original Example **
Description: This is a very nice all-original, all-matching, and fully-operational FN-49 rifle in 8mm Mauser built for the Egyptian Military in 1949. The FN Model 1949 was actually designed prior to World War 2, but Germany invaded Belgium and took over the FN plant and work on the rifle was cancelled. After the war ended the Belgian engineers returned to the FN plant and picked up where they left off designing this new semi-auto main battle rifle. When the design was finalized and ready for production it was named the Model 1949 or SAFN for "semi automatic FN". The semi-auto FN-49 featured a factory blue finish on all of the steel parts, a gas-operated short-stroke piston action with a tilting bolt, a 23.2" inch barrel, a manual gas cut-off located in front of the front sight block for launching grenades, a ten round fixed box magazine that was loaded using stripper clips, a safety located at the rear of the trigger, a sleeve-mounted bayonet lug on the bottom of the barrel, well-protected iron battle sights with a rear sight adjustable from 100 to 1000 meters, and a two-piece European Walnut pistol-grip stock set with a 3/4 length handguard. The stock hardware consists of one barrel band, a nosecap/front sight assembly, and a brass buttplate with a trap for cleaning rods/tools. Despite being a very well-made and well-designed rifle it had a relatively short production run due to the fierce competition of the HK G3 rifle and FN FAL which also both went into production around this time period and were more advanced in design. Despite all of the competition there were a total of 8 contracts made for the FN-49, all to countries not aligned with the West or the Soviet Bloc. A unique and innovative design feature of the rifle was it was not really caliber specific, so for example while the 1st contract went to Venezuela for 8000 FN-49's chambered in 7mm Mauser, the 2nd contract made to Egypt could be made easily despite it requiring the rifle to be chambered in 8mm Mauser. This came in very handy as the 3rd contract was made for the Belgian Government, who wanted them chambered in yet another caliber, .30-06 Springfield. All in all, the FN-49 went on to serve the countries where it saw service very well, earning a reputation for rugged durability, extreme reliability, and very good accuracy. This particular example is an Egyptian Contract rifle in 8mm Mauser, serial number 30954. This FN-49 looks like it has seen Egyptian Military service as it shows lots of small handling marks and some light finish wear on the metal combined with lots of small dings, dents, scratches, and handling marks showing on the stock set. This likely due to combat in the 1956 Suez Crisis where a large number of these FN-49's were used by Egyptian forces. It is a handsome gun with a battle-used patina on it. All of the factory markings are crisp and clear on this FN, and all of the serial numbered parts are matching (after we translated them from Arabic!). We removed and took-down the bolt assembly as well to make sure any numbered parts are matching. The stock is not numbered that we could find, but it does have an "H" stamped on the inside of the pistol grip along with a faint inspection symbol stamped behind the triggerguard. All of the stock hardware is still intact and in good shape except for one small part, the barrel band is missing the sling swivel. This should be easy to find. The brass buttplate fits the gun perfectly and is stout. The spring loaded trap door on the buttplate snaps shut with authority and stays closed, just as it was designed to do. The bore in this FN-49 is excellent, bright and clean with ZERO visible pitting or erosion. The rifling still looks sharp from the chamber to the crown of the muzzle. The action on this rifle is slick and smooth, and all of the controls on it are in perfect working order including the bolt hold-open and safety. The rear sight adjustments work perfectly and lock into place right where they are supposed to. There is no doubt that this Egyptian Contract FN-49 would still function just as well today as the day it left the FN factory more than 73 years ago.
